The job a logo does — and the job it cannot do
A logo identifies. On a board, a seal, a app icon, it should still read at small size and in one colour. That is a craft job. It does not pick type for GST invoices, does not tell an editor which maroon is allowed, and does not stop a printer from outlining your wordmark into mush.
If identification is the only job this quarter — a new GST entity, a stall, a prototype — logo-only can be enough. The moment three people produce assets, identification is not the only job.
Recognition is not trust
People can recognise a messy mark. Trust comes from repetition done cleanly: same colour, same space, same tone on WhatsApp. Identity is that repetition, encoded.
What Indian SMEs buy by accident
They buy three logo concepts, pick one with the uncle, and receive a JPEG on WhatsApp. No SVG, no clear space, no “do not rotate.” The intern then drops it on a stock gradient. That is the default Indian logo purchase. It is also why branding mistakes compound.
Agencies that sell “unlimited concepts” are selling indecision. Two strong directions with a system beat twelve marks with no files.
JPEG-on-WhatsApp is not a handover
Handover means named files, colour values, and a one-page do/do-not. If you cannot send that pack to a vendor today, you do not have identity yet.
When a logo-only job is the honest buy
Side project, name still in flux, or you are testing a market for 60 days. Pay little, keep vector if you can, and do not print 5,000 boxes. Naming checks should happen before you tattoo the mark on a van.
If you already know the name, the offer, and the channels, skipping identity to “save” ₹20,000 is usually false economy. Year-two rebuilds are louder than the OTP.
Name flux is a stop sign
Do not commission a full kit on a name your CA has not checked. Design after the legal and handle checks, or budget a redo.
What a full identity includes — and excludes
Includes: mark family, colour, type, space, templates, exports, and (at Full) a short guidelines PDF plus stationery. Excludes: a year of content, packaging for an entire catalogue, UI for twelve product screens, trademark prosecution.
Starter vs Full is coverage, not “more premium.” Full is for multi-vendor use. Starter is for a tight team. Rupees: Starter ₹25,000; Full ₹60,000.
Guidelines are for humans who will not read 80 pages
Small teams need examples: this Reel cover is right; this flex is wrong. Length is not seriousness. See the guidelines guide linked above.
WhatsApp, Instagram, and the first five seconds
Indian buyers often meet you as a DP, a status, or a Reel before they meet a website. A logo that only works on a white visiting card fails that meeting. Identity includes avatar crops and a colour that still reads on a cheap Android.
Voice is part of identity even when it is not “visual.” Brand voice for WhatsApp and Instagram is how the kit talks. Visual-only identity with rude, chaotic captions still feels unbranded.
SMM without a kit is rented chaos
Social Media Marketing from ₹20,000/mo cannot invent tokens. It can apply them weekly. Buy posting after the system, or accept that each month looks new.
Print, pack, and digital: one system or three files
If you sell a physical good, pack and digital must share tokens or the unboxing will feel like a different company than the ad. Sequence: packaging vs digital branding.
If you sell a service, the “pack” is the PDF proposal, the clinic board, and the invoice. Those still need the system. Professional services are not exempt.
Photography must inherit the same restraint
A gold logo with fluorescent clinic photos is two brands. Brand photography is identity maintenance, not a vanity shoot.
Cost: freelance mark vs starter kit vs full identity
Freelance mark: lowest OTP, highest hidden labour. Starter kit ₹25,000: enough for web and social if one person guards files. Full ₹60,000: cheaper than three vendors guessing. Detail: branding cost in India.
Canva Pro is a tool cost, not an identity cost. You can apply a kit in Canva. You cannot download a unique system from a template marketplace and call it strategy.
Who should still start on templates
A solo tutor testing weekend batches. Not a clinic with two doctors and ads going live. Honest hybrid: Canva vs professional kit.
How identity feeds website and UI
Developers need tokens: hex, type scale, button radius, logo SVGs. If identity is a PNG in a chat, the website will invent a third look. UI/UX at ₹50,000 assumes those tokens exist or we must make them first.
Do not brief UI as “make it like the logo.” Brief components. The mark is one asset on the screen, not the layout.
Colour and type are the bridge
Most “the website does not feel like us” bugs are palette and type, not the mark. Deep dive: colour and typography for Indian brands.
Clinics and B2B: a mark is not a reputation
A caduceus clone or a globe-and-swoosh does not make you look established. Process photos, named people, and consistent documents do. Identity supports that; it does not replace proof.
Startups and SMEs also need different theatre: startup vs SME branding. Do not buy a Series A brand film for a 12-person factory.
Vendors will break the mark unless you brief them
Printers, editors, franchise boards. One PDF and a “no” list saves the system. Keep vendors on brand.
A year-one decision table for Indian SMEs
Logo-only: name unstable or 60-day test. Starter kit: one city, Instagram + site, small team. Full identity: multiple vendors, print, guidelines. Refresh later if needed: rebrand vs refresh.
Brevia will not sell Full because Starter feels “less.” We will sell Full when your vendor list is real. Book a Consultation or Contact Us. Briefing: how to brief a Chennai agency.
What we refuse to call identity
A watermark, a Canva logo maker export, and a mark you do not own the source for. If the designer keeps the AI file, you rented a picture.
