Brand name, legal name, and domain are three fields
Legal entity (MCA), GST trade name, domain, and spoken brand can differ — but each difference is a customer support ticket. Minimise aliases unless you have a reason (holding company vs shop name).
Write all four on one line before design starts. Identity that ignores the invoice name creates “is this the same company?” on every PDF.
UPI and WhatsApp display are names too
People pay what they see. If GPay shows a different string than Instagram, you will field fraud fears. Treat those strings as brand surfaces.
MCA, GST, and trademark — high-level only
Company and LLP names follow MCA rules (too-similar names, prohibited words). GST registration has its own display. Trademarks are classes and confusion tests. None of this is something a Figma file can settle.
Ask your CA/CS for the entity name. Ask an IP attorney for the mark. We can list obvious web and social collisions. That is not a clearance opinion.
Similar is enough to be expensive
You do not need an identical match to get a cease-and-desist. “Looks and sounds close in Tamil Nadu” is already a reason to pick another candidate.
Linguistic checks: Tamil, Hindi, English, and slang
Say it aloud in the languages of your staff and customers. Check transliteration (one word, five spellings). Check accidental meanings. Family approval is not a language test.
Avoid names that only work in one script if your site, pack, and GST must live in English. Colour and type also has to carry both scripts later.
Nicknames will happen — plan the short form
If the legal name is long, people will abbreviate. Own the abbreviation or you will get four unofficial short names on Maps.
Domain, Instagram, and WhatsApp before the van wrap
Search the exact string, common misspell, and .com/.in. Check Instagram, YouTube, Facebook Page. A missing handle is not always fatal; an impersonator in your city is.
Do not add random underscores to “make it work” if customers will never type them. Prefer a slightly different distinctive name you can own.
Email is part of the name system
founder@gmail on invoices while the site uses a brand domain looks unofficial. Plan the mailbox with the name.
Names that fight SEO and Maps
Generic “Chennai Best Packers” names are crowded and hard to defend. Invented names need content to teach. Either path is a strategy, not a vibe. Rankings after a later change: rebranding without losing Google rankings.
Local modifiers help discovery and hurt expansion. Decide if you will still be “T Nagar X” in five years.
Homophones are search leaks
If two spellings are common, you will split queries. Pick one official spelling and use it everywhere, including ads.
Names that fight packaging and signage
Long compounds wrap badly on a sachet and a shop board. Tiny unique letters die at a distance. Test a one-colour lockup at small size before you fall in love.
If pack leads the business, read packaging vs digital first before you commit to a five-word name.
All-caps Tamil-English mixes need a type plan
A name is not done until it can be typeset. Save “we will make it work in design” for after a type test.
Test with customers, not the family group
Five people in your buyer city: can they spell it after hearing it once, would they WhatsApp it, does it sound like a category you do not want. Relatives vote on emotion. Buyers vote on memory.
Clinics and CAs: gravitas vs friendliness is a naming choice. Branding for professional services.
Do not crowd-source on Instagram polls
Public polls leak strategy and attract joke votes. Private interviews beat a story sticker.
Changing a name later is a project, not a caption
Legal, banking, pack, GBP, ads, website, and memory. Cost dwarfs the original identity OTP. Rebrand vs refresh.
If you must change, freeze design until the new string is stable. We will not run parallel wordmarks “just in case” as a process — that doubles files and errors.
Startup name churn is a credibility tax
Startup vs SME branding: investors may tolerate a rename; neighbourhood customers remember the old board.
What a branding studio should and should not do
Should: shortlists, tone, linguistic red flags we can see, handle/domain scan, lockup tests. Should not: guarantee registrability, file TM-A, or advise on MCA forms.
Mistakes we still see: designing first, naming second; copying a metro cafe name; ignoring class conflicts. Branding mistakes.
Identity OTP waits for a frozen string
Starter ₹25,000 and Full ₹60,000 assume a name. Naming exploration can be a paid slice before that, not an infinite WhatsApp brainstorm inside the design fee.
Briefing naming inside a Chennai identity project
Send legal constraints, cities, languages, must-include/must-avoid words, and whether descriptive SEO names are allowed. How to brief a branding agency.
Book a Consultation or Contact Us. After the name freezes, logo vs identity decides the kit depth. Voice: WhatsApp and Instagram.
Bring the attorney note if you have one
A one-line “avoid X class” saves a week of pretty but dead options. We design inside constraints. We do not invent legal comfort.
