Colour is category, culture, and cheap print — together
Category codes exist (pharmacy green, legal navy) and can be used or broken on purpose. Culture (festival reds, temple colours) is real and should be a campaign layer more often than a core identity, or you will clash with every sale creative.
Cheap print is the constraint metro decks skip. If the palette only works on coated stock and calibrated monitors, it is not an Indian SME palette.
One primary you can name in a shop
Staff should say “our blue” and pick the same chip. If they cannot, the palette is a mood board.
Festival palettes vs everyday identity
Keep a core pair that appears in January and June. Add limited festival tokens with expiry. SMM calendars should inherit that rule so Pongal does not become the new logo colour.
Sweets, jewellery, and ethnic wear can live closer to festival codes. SaaS and clinics usually should not.
Sale red is not a personality
If every offer is neon red, you trained buyers to ignore you except at 50% off. Keep offer colour distinct from identity colour.
Contrast, accessibility, and two-wheeler viewing
Boards are read in motion. Thin gold on cream fails. Instagram is read on cheap Androids in sunlight. Contrast is sales, not compliance theatre.
Body text on the website must still pass basic contrast. A “premium pale grey” that nobody can read is not premium.
Colour-blind and low-vision customers still buy
Do not encode meaning in colour alone (only-red = error, only-green = go) on pack or UI. Use shape and words.
Type that survives Tamil and English
If you publish both scripts, the pairing is the brand. x-height, weight, and tone should feel related. A fashion English display plus a default Tamil Noto mashup looks like two vendors.
For English-only firms, still plan numerals, rupee, and GSTIN in tables. Fancy display fonts that break 0/O in invoices are a finance problem.
Do not fake Tamil with English letter tricks
Stylised Latin that “looks Tamil” to a designer often looks silly to a Tamil reader. Use real script, or stay in one language honestly.
Web vs flex vs visiting card
Web: variable or webfont performance, fallbacks. Flex: thick strokes, fewer hairlines. Cards: small sizes, one-colour version. The same family may need different cuts, not a different personality each time.
Packaging adds legal text in tiny sizes. If pack is in play, packaging vs digital.
Hairline logos are a Chennai summer problem
Heat, distance, and cheap vinyl eat thin strokes. Test a one-colour large print before you freeze a delicate wordmark.
Common India mistakes: gradients, seven fonts, fake gold
Gradients that cannot print. Three display fonts on one menu. Gold that becomes mud in CMYK. Drop shadows as “premium.” These are branding mistakes we still receive as “final.”
Canva defaults encourage extra fonts. Lock the kit. Canva vs professional kit.
Stock gradients are not culture
A saffron-green wash on a tech firm is not patriotism. It is a template. Be specific or be quiet.
Pairing colour with photography
Wardrobe, walls, and product must live with the palette or the grid will fight the kit. Brand photography.
Clinic whites vs brand maroon: choose so uniforms and walls do not clash with the board. Professional services.
Filters are a second, unofficial palette
If every intern uses a different Instagram filter, you do not have colour tokens. Ban filters or pick one and write it down.
Building a small, strict palette
Primary, support, background, text, alert. Hex + CMYK + a nearest cloth/paint analogue if you have uniforms or interiors. Never-use list for vendor crime prevention.
Put it in the PDF. Full identity ₹60,000 is partly this discipline. Starter ₹25,000 still needs the values even without a long book. Logo vs identity.
Name colours in human language
“Primary / Hex” for files; “Board blue” for staff. Engineers and uncles need different labels for the same chip.
UI/UX screens inherit the system — they should not invent one
The ₹50,000 UI/UX pack should consume tokens: type scale, colour roles, radius. If Figma invents a fourth blue, the product is a different brand from Instagram.
Web apps and marketing sites both need this. Do not let a developer pick Bootstrap defaults “for speed” after you paid for identity.
Dark mode is optional; contrast is not
SMEs often do not need dark mode. They need readable forms on mobile data. Prioritise that in the prototype.
How Brevia picks type you can actually licence
We check script coverage, company licence, and whether Canva/Google Fonts can proxy for intern work without splitting the look. We will not build a wordmark on a font you cannot buy in India at a sane price.
