What Indian businesses actually mean by “better”
“Better” usually means: my cousin can edit it, it loads on cheap Android, WhatsApp is on every page, and Google finds our service area. Feature lists from US blogs skip those constraints.
Score Wix and WordPress on editor fear, not on plugin counts. A WordPress site the owner is afraid to touch is worse than a simpler Wix site they actually update.
Score also on exit. If you might hire an agency in 18 months, WordPress files on hosting you control are easier to hand over than a Wix account with two-factor on someone’s personal Gmail.
Owner-edited vs intern-edited vs agency-edited
Owner-edited favours Wix’s guided canvas. Intern-edited content mills favour WordPress. Agency-edited custom marketing may even skip both — see Framer vs WordPress.
Editor experience for non-technical owners
Wix’s drag-and-drop matches how people think: “move that box left.” WordPress block editors have improved, but themes still hide settings, and a bad page builder plugin recreates the same chaos Wix is blamed for.
Train the actual person who will edit — not the founder who will never log in. We watch that person change a fee table on a call before we call the CMS a success.
Mobile editing matters in India. If updates happen from a phone in a clinic corridor, test that path. Some WordPress admin themes are miserable on a 6-inch screen; Wix is often smoother there for small sites.
Page builders are not automatically WordPress winning
Elementor-style stacks can make WordPress as locked-in and slow as any SaaS if you let them. We prefer disciplined blocks over a second visual builder bolted on for vanity.
Permissions for a receptionist vs a marketer
WordPress roles (editor vs admin) are a real advantage when one person should not install plugins. Wix roles exist but the blast radius of a wrong click is different. Design roles around your staff, not a template.
SEO and content volume
A 6-page Wix site with clean titles can rank locally. A 60-URL WordPress service site with thin duplicate pages will not. Volume without intent is not a WordPress advantage.
WordPress still wins when you need clusters: treatments, localities, FAQs, and a blog that is not a boxed afterthought. URL control, redirects, and XML sitemaps are daily tools, not settings you hunt once.
Wix has added SEO features; they are enough until they are not. The failure mode is hitting a ceiling when content ops mature — not a penalty on day one.
Local SEO is not a platform feature
Google Business Profile, NAP consistency, and reviews sit outside both CMS choices. Do not buy WordPress to “get local SEO” if you will not do the GBP work. Monthly SEO is a separate product.
Plugins, apps, and the “we need one more thing” problem
WordPress plugins solve GST PDFs, booking, LMS, and membership — and they also conflict, slow the site, and attract malware when they are pirated. Discipline is the price of the ecosystem.
Wix apps are fewer and more contained. That is a feature until the app you need is missing or expensive. Count the missing apps against Wix before you celebrate simplicity.
Every extra app is a monthly USD bill plus a login you will forget. Write the three must-have integrations (WhatsApp, payments, CRM) before browsing marketplaces.
WhatsApp and forms beat chatbot theatre
Most Indian SME sites need click-to-WhatsApp and a short form, not a full bot in month one. Both platforms can do that. Do not pick WordPress only because someone demoed a chatbot plugin.
Payments, GST invoices, and Indian checkout
Neither Wix nor WordPress is “the payment platform.” Razorpay, UPI, and COD live in apps/plugins or a dedicated store (Shopify). If checkout is the product, this comparison is the wrong one — read Shopify vs WooCommerce.
Wix Stores can take payments; complexity of Indian GST invoices, shipping, and partial COD still pushes growing catalogues off Wix. WooCommerce on WordPress keeps content and cart together if you already committed to WordPress.
If you only collect advances via UPI QR and close on WhatsApp, you may not need a cart at all. A business website plus a clear CTA often converts better than a half-store.
QR-and-WhatsApp is a valid checkout
Do not force Wix Stores or WooCommerce onto a consultancy that invoices offline. A fake cart trains buyers badly and creates support tickets you cannot fulfil.
Ownership, export, and agency lock-in
WordPress on hosting you control is portable: another vendor can take the files and database. Wix is portable as content with lossy design. That difference shows up when you fire an agency.
Lock-in also happens on WordPress via a page builder, a custom theme only one freelancer understands, or admin hosted on a random cPanel the freelancer will not hand over. Demand credentials in writing.
Domain registrar, Google Search Console, and GA4 should sit on the company’s email, not the vendor’s. That is independent of Wix vs WordPress and we insist on it from Chennai builds.
Ask for a walk-out packet
Logins, 2FA owners, backup method, and last theme/plugin list. If a Wix partner or WordPress freelancer cannot produce that, you are renting a black box.
Rebuild vs migrate language
Wix → WordPress is almost always a rebuild with redirects. WordPress → WordPress host change is a migration. Do not let a quote blur those words.
Cost over three years, not launch week
Wix: annual plan in USD, possible business-plan upgrades, apps. WordPress: hosting, SSL, backups, premium plugins, care hours. Launch week WordPress can look cheaper; year three depends on whether you actually maintain it.
Brevia floors for the site itself: Landing Page ₹7,500; Static from ₹18,000; Business Website ₹28,000; Dynamic + SEO ₹50,000 + ₹15,000/mo. Wix subscription is extra if you insist on Wix; we will say if we would rather not build there.
Add founder time. A “free” WordPress that takes four hours a month of anxious clicking is not free.
Care retainers exist because sites rot
Updates, uptime, and form spam are operations. Budget them. A Wix site still needs content hygiene; a WordPress site needs technical hygiene too.
Performance and Core Web Vitals on Indian mobile
Both can fail Core Web Vitals. Wix used to be an easy punchline; it improved. WordPress with a heavy builder, sliders, and uncompressed hero videos still fails on Jio 4G in a bus.
Measure on a mid-range Android, not on the agency iMac. Compress images. Kill autoplay. One font family is enough.
If performance is the only reason you want to leave WordPress, a static site or Next.js may be the real comparison — not Wix.
Hero videos are a conversion tax
A 12 MB header does not look premium on a 4G clinic booking flow. We will cut it even if a Wix template includes it.
When Wix is the honest answer
Small brochure, one editor, no store, need to launch this month, no appetite to learn hosting. A photographer, tutor, or new consultancy can live here for a year without shame.
It is also honest as a placeholder while a product is undefined — cheaper than a custom Next.js experiment you will throw away.
Time-box the Wix decision
Write a review date (e.g. 12 months). If blog volume or SKUs crossed a line, plan WordPress or Shopify — do not wait for pain.
When WordPress is the honest answer
Service clusters, hiring a content person, multilingual URLs, WooCommerce on the horizon, or you want another Chennai vendor to be able to take over the files. That is most growing SMEs we see.
It is not honest if nobody will update plugins. In that case buy a static site or a tightly scoped Wix and skip the CMS fantasy.
WordPress is not “more professional” by default
Buyers do not check your CMS. They check speed, trust, and whether WhatsApp answers. Professionalism is the build quality, not wp-admin.
