What each product is actually selling you
Wix sells a visual canvas: pages, bookings, blog, and a store module. Shopify sells orders: products, checkout, inventory, and an app economy aimed at merchants.
If your Instagram bio needs a shop this quarter and a 12-page brand story, Wix’s combined editor is tempting. If your warehouse needs SKUs, locations, and fulfilment emails that do not break, Shopify is the operating system.
The “one login for everything” trap
Founders love one dashboard. That is Wix’s pitch. The cost is a commerce ceiling you hit the week you add sizes, bundles, or a 3PL. One login is not a strategy.
Indian payments, GST, and invoice reality
Checkout must speak UPI, cards, netbanking, and often EMI. Shopify’s Indian payment apps and Razorpay integrations are battle-tested for D2C. Wix can take money; merchant of record, invoice fields, and GST-ready documents vary by plan and app quality.
Ask any vendor to show a live INR checkout with your GSTIN on the invoice PDF — not a US demo store. That one screenshot filters 90% of “we also do Wix e-commerce” pitches.
- UPI and Razorpay as default, not an afterthought
- GST invoice fields your CA will accept
- Refunds that match the original payment rail
- Failed-payment retry without duplicate orders
Why “international plan pricing” misleads Indian SMEs
Dollar plans ignore GST on SaaS, rupee settlement delays, and chargeback language. Model rupee GMV and app stack, not the marketing site’s “from $29.”
Catalogue, variants, and festival inventory
Wix Stores is comfortable with simple products. Shopify is built for variants, collections, and bulk edits. Diwali and Big Billion adjacent spikes punish messy catalogues.
If you sell one pickle SKU, either works. If you sell kurtas in six sizes and four colours, Wix’s product editor becomes the bottleneck — your intern will dread restock week.
When a spreadsheet is still your PIM
Shopify CSV and apps assume you will grow into them. Wix imports exist but merchant tooling is shallower. If your “PIM” is a Google Sheet, Shopify plus a disciplined import wins.
COD, RTO, and WhatsApp-led selling
Cash on delivery is still real for many Indian categories. Shopify’s order states plus apps (and middleware) let you verify address on WhatsApp before packing. Wix can take a COD flag; the ops graph around it is thinner.
If buyers complete purchase in DMs, you still need an order object. Shopify is where we log those orders; Wix becomes a pretty menu that ops ignores. Related commerce ops thinking lives in our automation writing, but the storefront choice is still Shopify-first.
RTO is a process, not a theme setting
Neither platform magically lowers return-to-origin. Shopify makes holds, tags, and fulfilment apps easier. Budget process, not a magic COD toggle on Wix.
Apps, 3PLs, and the Indian logistics stack
Shiprocket, Delhivery, Unicommerce-style connectors, subscription apps, and review widgets are denser on Shopify. Wix’s App Market is broader for websites, narrower for serious fulfilment.
Every extra Wix workaround is a future migration tax. Count the apps you know you will need in month six, not the ones on the sales deck.
App cost can erase the “cheap plan”
Shopify’s app bill surprises founders too. Still, replacing a missing Wix 3PL connector with a human coordinator is usually more expensive than a Shopify app.
SEO and ads landing for product traffic
Shopify collection and product URL patterns are understood by Google and by agencies running Shopping-style campaigns. Wix SEO has improved; product-led organic still favours a real commerce IA.
Paid traffic should not hit a generic homepage. Pair the store with dedicated Landing Pages from ₹7,500 when the ad promise is one SKU or a festival offer — on either platform.
Blog as SEO versus blog as afterthought
Wix blogging is fine for brand stories. Shopify blogging is adequate. If content is the acquisition engine and products are secondary, you may want WordPress plus a cart — not Wix Stores.
Design freedom versus checkout trust
Wix’s editor wins first-impression design speed. Shopify Online Store 2.0 themes are more constrained — and that constraint protects checkout trust. Indian buyers abandon fancy carts that hide the price until the last step.
We customise Shopify sections so the brand looks considered without reinventing checkout. Framer-pretty storefronts that sync badly to Shopify are a known failure mode — native Shopify beats a fragile visual layer.
Theme customisation is not a new platform
Hiring someone to “make Shopify look like Wix” is valid. Hiring Wix to “act like Shopify” is how catalogues stall. Design within the commerce OS.
Total cost of ownership in rupees
Sum plan + payment fees + apps + developer hours + migration risk. Wix looks cheaper at 30 orders a month. Shopify usually wins at 300 — especially with ads.
Brevia e-commerce floors: stores from ₹38,000 OTP. Business brochure sites from ₹28,000. Static sites from ₹18,000. Do not buy a store package for a brochure. Package map: Website Development.
What changes a Shopify quote
Custom sections, large catalogues, multi-currency later, B2B price lists, and WhatsApp order logging. Bring SKU count and last-month GMV to consultation.
When we tell you to stay on Wix
Under ~20 simple SKUs, no 3PL, website is really a visiting card, and nobody will hire a store manager. Spend on photography and ads instead.
Migration path if you already live on Wix
Export products, customers, and redirects. Rebuild navigation and collection logic. Recreate pixels. Do not “redesign in Wix one last time” two weeks before a sale.
Redirect map is non-negotiable or you donate SEO and ad Quality Score. We treat this as a Shopify project with a cutover checklist, not a plugin click.
Parallel run during the first sale week
Keep Wix taking overflow only if URLs are clearly canonicalised. Mixed carts confuse support. Prefer a hard cutover with a support banner.
Decision rule we use on Chennai discovery calls
If revenue depends on orders, Shopify (or WooCommerce if you are already a WordPress shop — Shopify vs WooCommerce). If revenue depends on enquiries and you sell five merch SKUs, Wix or a business site plus a small shop can wait.
Unsure? Use How to choose a website platform and then Book a Consultation. We would rather lose a Shopify invoice than launch the wrong OS.
One question that ends the meeting
“What breaks if we get 50 orders tomorrow?” If the answer is ‘the Wix editor and our Sheet,’ you already know the platform.
