Shopify vs WooCommerce — Which E-Commerce Platform in India?

Shopify vs WooCommerce for Indian stores: UPI, COD, GST, apps vs plugins, festival traffic, total cost, and when each platform is the better cart from Chennai.

Brevia Tech SolutionsPublished 30 October 2026Updated 28 October 2026

Shopify vs WooCommerce is the store decision Indian founders actually have to make. Wix Stores and custom React checkouts are side plots. You are choosing where carts live, who hosts uptime, and how GST, UPI, and COD will fail at 11 p.m. when a Meta ad is live.

Shopify is a rented commerce OS. WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin on hosting you (or your agency) must keep alive. One is not “more Indian.” Both take Razorpay. Both can invoice badly if you skip GST apps. Both can look premium or cheap depending on the theme, not the platform blog post.

We implement both from Chennai. The E-Commerce Store floor is ₹38,000 for a scoped first store — not an unlimited app budget. If you need the wider CMS map, start with WordPress vs Shopify or the five-stack guide.

This comparison stays on the cart: catalogue, checkout, apps vs plugins, festival traffic, staff roles, and lock-in. It will not crown a winner for “all of India.” A 40-SKU homemade-food brand in Tambaram and a 4,000-SKU fashion label running Reels ads do not share a platform.

If your “e-commerce” is still quotes on WhatsApp with a PDF catalogue, you may need a business website and payment links — not a cart. Buying Shopify to look like D2C is how founders pay rent to a platform they do not use.

Store-first vs CMS-first

Shopify assumes the site exists to sell SKUs. Blog, about, and lookbooks are supporting pages. WooCommerce assumes you already live in WordPress and want a cart among the posts.

If your growth channel is product ads and collection pages, start Shopify-shaped. If your growth channel is long articles that happen to sell a course or a few products, WooCommerce on WordPress stays coherent.

Forcing a magazine brand onto Shopify or a pure store onto a bloated WordPress theme is how you fight the tool every week.

The homepage test

If the homepage must be a merchandising surface that changes twice a week, Shopify admin plus a decent theme is faster. If it must be a publisher’s front page, WordPress is faster.

Indian payments, UPI, and COD

UPI success rates, EMI, netbanking, and COD reconciliation are operational problems. Platform choice only decides which app or plugin you configure and who you call when a settlement is stuck.

Shopify: payment apps, Shopify Payments eligibility (not always the Indian SME default), and COD as an extra flow you must design — not a checkbox you forget. WooCommerce: Razorpay/CCAvenue/etc. plugins plus your SSL and webhook reliability.

COD is not “free checkout.” It is reverse logistics and fake orders. Neither platform magically filters those. OTP and prepaid incentives are process, not a theme setting.

Test the failure path, not the happy UPI QR

Decline a card, kill the UPI timer, place COD, cancel. If your staging store cannot show those states, you are not ready for ads. We include this in discovery for the ₹38,000 store scope.

WhatsApp after the order is part of checkout

Indian buyers still message “did you get my order?” Official order updates plus a WhatsApp path beat a pretty thank-you page that goes nowhere. Keep the store platform and the message channel as two connected jobs.

Catalogue, variants, and GST

Variants (size/colour) and GST-compliant invoices are where hobby stores break. Shopify’s product model is stricter and usually better for fashion and D2C kits. WooCommerce can model anything and then become unmaintainable.

GST: you need a method for invoices, HSN, and state-wise tax — apps on Shopify, plugins on Woo. “We will do invoices in Excel” does not survive 200 orders a week.

Bulk upload from a messy Excel is a project on both. Clean the sheet before you blame the platform.

HSN and tax are not a theme option

Ask your CA what the invoice must show, then pick the app/plugin that can print it. Do not reverse that order after 500 SKUs are live.

Apps vs plugins: monthly bleed

Shopify’s App Store is how you buy reviews, upsells, subscriptions, and delivery. Each app is USD rent plus another vendor’s uptime. WooCommerce plugins can be one-time or subscription and sit on your PHP process, which is a performance tax.

Cap the list: payments, GST invoice, search, reviews, one WhatsApp/abandoned-cart tool. A “growth stack” of 25 apps is how stores get slow and unsupportable.

We will refuse to install pirate nulls on WooCommerce. That is a hard line — same as refusing unofficial WhatsApp senders on other projects.

Count monthly USD before you celebrate INR build price

A ₹38,000 build plus ₹12,000/month in apps is a different product from a ₹38,000 build plus two essential apps. Put the run-rate on the same slide as the OTP.

Checkout, shipping, and WhatsApp-led sales

Shopify checkout is a reason people pay rent: fewer “it broke on mobile” stories when the theme is not sabotaged. WooCommerce checkout quality is whatever the theme, plugin, and host allow.

Shipping: Shiprocket/Delhivery/etc. connect to both. Pincode serviceability and COD fees must be configured or you will take orders you cannot ship to a village pincode.

Many Indian stores still close size doubts on WhatsApp. Design that as a first-class path, not a floating widget covering the buy button.

Do not hide the buy button behind a chatbot

If ads send people to a product URL, the next tap is add-to-cart or WhatsApp with context — not a 12-step bot. Conversion structure first; widgets second.

Total cost of ownership in INR

Shopify: subscription + theme + apps + possible plus plan + transaction nuances + Brevia or in-house merchandising time. WooCommerce: hosting (real hosting), theme, plugins, security, developer hours, downtime risk.

Brevia floor ₹38,000 is theme + scoped catalogue + Indian payments + WhatsApp/form path — not a custom headless storefront. Dynamic Business Website + SEO (₹50,000 + ₹15,000/mo) is a different product for content-led businesses, not a substitute cart.

Custom Next.js storefronts start from ₹50,000 as a floor and climb fast. Do not use “custom React checkout” to avoid a Shopify bill unless you have engineering.

Festival overtime is a line item

Someone must watch the store on sale days. Shopify status pages vs your Woo host’s 2 a.m. ticket are different risk profiles. Price that risk.

Theme customisation is where quotes explode

Moving a button is not the same as rewriting cart logic. We separate theme polish from checkout surgery so the ₹38,000 scope stays honest.

Performance, uptime, and festival traffic

Shopify’s job is to stay up when you run a 40% off collection. You still can break it with a heavy theme and app scripts. WooCommerce on underpowered hosting will fall over even with a “fast” theme.

Image weight, app scripts, and review widgets kill mobile conversion on both. Core Web Vitals are a merchandising problem as much as a platform problem.

Plan load tests or at least a staging checklist before the first big sale. Do not discover PHP memory limits on Dussehra night.

Caching is not optional on WooCommerce

Page cache plus object cache plus a host that understands Woo is the minimum. If your vendor says “shared hosting is fine for 1,000 concurrent,” get another vendor.

Staff roles: who updates products

Shopify admin is generally kinder to a merchandiser who is not technical. WooCommerce admin is familiar if the same person already writes WordPress posts — and confusing if they do not.

Permissions: who can change price vs who can install apps. Lock that down. A junior intern with admin is how discount codes go viral accidentally.

Photography and size charts are still the bottleneck, not the CMS. Platform choice will not fill an empty catalogue.

Train on the actual SKU workflow

Create a product, set GST, add a variant, attach a size chart, hit a collection. If that takes 20 minutes of hunting, the theme/admin setup failed — regardless of Shopify vs Woo.

Migration and lock-in

Leaving Shopify means exporting products and rebuilding apps and checkout. Leaving WooCommerce means you still own the content but lose plugin behaviour. Both are projects.

URLs and redirects decide whether your ad account and SEO survive the move. Never change platform the week you scale spend.

Wix Stores → Shopify is a common Indian upgrade path; see Shopify vs Wix for stores. WordPress brochure → WooCommerce is an add-on, not an automatic win.

Do not migrate and rebrand in the same week

New domain + new platform + new creative is three experiments. Split them or you will not know what broke conversion.

When Shopify wins in India — and when WooCommerce does

Shopify wins: ad-led D2C, variants, you will not hire a Woo specialist, you want rented uptime. WooCommerce wins: WordPress already trusted, content + cart, modest SKUs, you have real hosting and a maintainer.

WooCommerce also wins some B2B price-list oddities that fight Shopify’s product model — at the cost of more custom plugin work. Quote that honestly or it will eat the ₹38,000 envelope.

Default we use when the brief is thin

If the founder says “D2C, ads, COD, no in-house dev,” we lean Shopify. If they say “we already have WordPress and 30 products,” we lean WooCommerce. Thin briefs still need SKU and payment facts before we lock it.

Most ad-driven D2C brands with variants, COD, and festival spikes are happier on Shopify. WooCommerce fits content-led catalogues already on WordPress. Read the rest of this page before copying a YouTuber’s “always Shopify” line.

Both can. Shopify uses payment apps and Shopify Payments availability rules; WooCommerce uses Razorpay/other plugins on your hosting. Implementation quality beats the logo. Test UPI, netbanking, and failure retries on staging.

Yes on competent hosting with caching and a lean plugin list. No on a ₹199 shared cPanel with five sliders. Shopify’s uptime is part of what you rent. Budget hosting honestly if you choose Woo.

E-Commerce Store ₹38,000 OTP for a scoped Shopify or WooCommerce setup (theme, catalogue shape, Indian payments, WhatsApp path). App forests, custom checkout, and large migrations are extra. Hub: Website Development.

Build can be similar. Then you pay hosting, premium plugins, security, and a developer when PHP breaks. Shopify’s subscription is visible; WooCommerce’s ops are often hidden until a crash.

Sometimes a brochure plus payment links is enough. A cart is for catalogue, shipping, and order ops. Do not buy Shopify to sell twelve SKUs you already close on WhatsApp unless ads need product URLs.

Yes as a migration project: products, customers, redirects, apps. It is not an export button. If you already feel Woo hosting is the bottleneck, plan the move before a festival — not during one.
