Static sites: speed, simplicity, and the edit bottleneck
A static marketing site is HTML you host on cheap, fast infrastructure. No wp-admin to brute-force. Excellent for profile sites, event microsites, and founders who email a developer two copy changes a quarter.
The bottleneck is you. If the sales head in Coimbatore needs to change a price tonight, static without a CMS is the wrong kindness. Either accept a small change SLA or do not choose static.
Static does not mean “no forms”
Forms, WhatsApp CTAs, and analytics all work. You skip the CMS, not interactivity. Landing pages are often static even for large brands.
WordPress: the editor bargain and the plugin tax
WordPress is the bargain: marketing can ship a Diwali offer page without a sprint. The tax is updates, hosting, and plugin discipline. We build WordPress as a constrained design system, not a toy box.
If nobody on your team will log in, you bought a CMS for a ghost. That is the most common Indian SME WordPress failure we audit.
Headless WordPress is still WordPress ops
A Next.js front end with WP as CMS can be the right custom path — you still patch WordPress. Do not pretend headless deleted the CMS.
Custom Next.js / React: ownership with a payroll
Custom code (we prefer Next.js) wins when you need routing, auth, dashboards, or Core Web Vitals as a product requirement. It is how we run breviatech.io.
It loses when the brief is “change the testimonial once a month” and you refuse a CMS. Custom without content tooling recreates the static bottleneck at a higher day rate.
Custom is not a synonym for expensive animation
Motion can live on Webflow or Framer. Custom should mean data, performance, and features. If you only want a cinematic homepage, read Wix vs Framer vs Webflow.
Who types into the site every week?
Map roles: founder, intern, agency, developer. WordPress needs a trained editor. Static needs a ticket. Custom needs a backlog. Mismatch here is 90% of rebuilds.
Tamil Nadu service firms often have a receptionist who can update hours but not FTP. That single fact can justify WordPress over static even for eight pages.
The intern test
If a new intern cannot add a blog post without breaking layout, your WordPress was not built — it was themed. That is a vendor problem, not a CMS indictment.
SEO, schema, and publishing cadence
Cadence decides CMS. Weekly articles: WordPress or a custom CMS. Quarterly service copy: static is fine. Product docs that feel like an app: custom.
Technical SEO (titles, CWV, internal links) is stack-agnostic labour. Buy SEO when you will act on the report, not to decorate a static site with unread blogs.
Programmatic pages need a generator
City or SKU pages at volume are not a WordPress intern task. That is custom or a disciplined generator — closer to our Next.js work than to a theme.
Security and hosting in an India SME context
Static’s attack surface is small. WordPress is a magnet if unpatched. Custom is as safe as your auth and dependencies. Hosting quality in India varies; a ₹99 host is not a platform comparison.
Compliance conversations (patient forms, payment data) belong in architecture, not in “WordPress is insecure” slogans. Do not put card data on any of these without a proper payment provider.
Backups are a policy
Static in Git is a backup. WordPress without offsite backups is a story we hear after a hack. Custom without staging is how Friday deploys ruin Monday ads.
Cost floors and what they actually buy
Static from ₹18,000: scoped pages, mobile layout, SEO foundations, handover. WordPress business from ₹28,000: editor-ready templates. Custom from ₹50,000: engineering, not a template with extra JSX.
Landing pages from ₹7,500 sit beside any of the three. Dynamic + SEO ₹50,000 + ₹15,000/mo is a WordPress/Next marketing system with ongoing work — not a static brochure.
Upgrade paths that do not throw the brand away
Static → WordPress: rebuild templates around a CMS. WordPress → Next.js: keep IA, replace rendering. Next.js → app: you were already on the path.
Design systems and content inventory make upgrades cheaper. Random Elementor pages do not. If you are on a builder, see Framer vs WordPress before another year of lock-in.
Do not “just add WordPress” to a static host
Dropping WP on a static folder is how you inherit two systems. Plan a cutover with redirects, same as any migration.
When Shopify or Wix sneaks into this conversation
If the site sells products, you are not in this fork — you are in WordPress vs Shopify or Shopify vs Wix. Static storefronts without a commerce OS are a hobby.
Wix/Framer can replace static for teams that want visual editing. That is a builder decision, not custom code. Keep the models separate on the discovery call.
Brochure now, store next year
Ship static or WordPress for credibility, then a Shopify subdomain. Do not invent a custom cart on a static site because a developer offered one.
Chooser we use in Chennai scoping
Rare edits + speed: static. Weekly edits + blog: WordPress. Product features or strict CWV/ownership: Next.js custom. Ad campaigns: add landing pages regardless.

What we will not scope as “custom”
A five-page brochure with a contact form. That is static or WordPress. Custom budget should buy software behaviour, not a fancier About page.
What we will not scope as “static”
A newsroom, 40 service locations, or a founder who changes pricing daily. Kindness is WordPress or a real CMS, not an HTML prison.
