The only questions analytics must answer
Where did useful people come from? Which URL started the session? Did they tap WhatsApp, call, or submit? Where did they hesitate? Everything else is optional.
If ads are the spend, you need campaign → landing → event. If SEO is the spend, you need query → landing → event. Vanity homepage sessions without a landing report waste monthly SEO retainers.
A decision log beats a 20-page dashboard
Write four decisions you will make monthly (pause a campaign, rewrite a service page, move the CTA, fix a form). Build reports only for those.
GA4 property hygiene for Indian businesses
One property per brand website. Time zone Asia/Kolkata. Currency INR. Filter internal IPs of the office and the agency. Link Search Console and — if you advertise — Google Ads with the same conversions you trust.
Do not create three properties because three freelancers each made one. Ownership lives on a company Google account. Document the Measurement ID in the brief.
Data retention and admin access
Set event-level retention consciously. Remove departed vendors. An agency that “will set up later” and keeps Owner is a hostage situation.
Enhanced measurement is not a plan
Scroll and outbound clicks are noisy. Use them as clues, then replace with named events for WhatsApp and forms.
The event taxonomy that survives a year
Name events as verbs: form_start, generate_lead, click_whatsapp, click_call, click_maps, file_download, sign_up, purchase. Parameters: page_location, form_id, service, method (organic/paid). Keep the list under twelve for an SME.
Mark only two or three as key events. If everything is a conversion, nothing is. Lead-gen key event is usually generate_lead plus click_whatsapp if WhatsApp is the real close.
WhatsApp, click-to-call, and the Indian conversion
Most Chennai service sites convert off-form. If you only track form_submit you undercount. Fire click_whatsapp with the number or wa.me link and the page. Fire click_call on tel: links.
Train staff that a WhatsApp ping is a lead: name, source page, timestamp. Analytics without a human SLA is a graph of missed chats. Operations live in the forms and CRM piece.
Multiple numbers and staff phones
One business number in GA4. Personal numbers in the footer destroy attribution and compliance.
Clarity: recordings without becoming creepy
Watch rage clicks on the primary CTA, dead clicks on non-links, and excessive scrolling past a buried form. Sample ten sessions a week from paid landings — not random homepage tourists.
Mask inputs. Block recording on /checkout or any page that shows addresses if you are not ready to treat recordings as personal data. Clarity is a tool, not a CCTV brag.
Heatmaps lie on long Tamil pages
A red blob on the first screen can mean people read — or that the next heading is below a 900px hero. Read recordings before you “fix” a heatmap.
Landing pages, ads, and UTMs
Every paid URL needs utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign. The landing must match the ad. Measure that URL in GA4, not the homepage. Campaign builds: Landing Pages.
If you only have a homepage, you will not know which offer worked. That is a site architecture problem described in landing vs full website.
Broken UTMs from Instagram bios
Use a single short link with UTMs. Five staff rewriting the bio weekly is how “direct” becomes your largest source.
Stores: GA4 ecommerce versus Shopify reports
view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, purchase should match Shopify orders within a tolerance — refunds, COD rejects, and iOS privacy will never be 1:1. Do not fire both a custom purchase and a native one and double-count ads.
Platform choice still comes first: Shopify vs WooCommerce and Woo vs Shopify vs custom. Analytics cannot rescue a theme that drops checkout.
COD and “purchase” honesty
A confirmed order is not a delivered order. Report GMV and delivered GMV separately in ops; do not ask GA4 to be your accounts team.
Stack notes: WordPress, Next.js, Wix, Framer
WordPress: site kit or GTM, not five plugins that each inject gtag. Next.js: route-aware page_view and a dataLayer you control — see Next.js cost. Wix and Framer have native connects; still verify WhatsApp clicks fire.
Choosing the CMS is how to choose a platform. Measurement should not decide the CMS unless you need a custom event stream only Next.js can own.
SPA page views
Client-side navigation without a virtual page_view undercounts. Test a three-click path in DebugView before you trust month one.
What Brevia installs from Chennai
GA4 + Clarity, IST, INR, four to eight named events, masked replays, and a one-page tracking spec in the handoff. Ads pixels only if you asked. Cost sits in the published floors unless you need a warehouse.
