Match the host to the stack first
WordPress needs PHP, MySQL, HTTPS, cron, and a real backup. WooCommerce needs more CPU and object cache discipline. Next.js needs Node or a static export target. Shopify/Wix/Framer are hosted products — you are choosing a plan, not a VPS.
If the stack is undecided, stop and use how to choose a platform. Buying three years of shared hosting before the CMS is backwards.
SaaS hosts you do not pick
Shopify, Wix, and Framer include hosting. Your job is plan limits, CDN, and exit. Do not also buy a Hostinger box “for the website” unless you have a second property.
Region, CDN, and Indian mobile networks
Origin in Mumbai, Delhi NCR, or another nearby region plus a CDN is the usual win for Tamil Nadu mobile users. A Sydney or US-only origin without a CDN shows up as slow LCP on 4G.
CDN is not optional on image-heavy sites. It does not fix a 4 MB hero or a render-blocking page builder. That is still a build problem.
Data residency versus latency
Some buyers ask for India-only data. That is a contract question (health, finance, public sector). Most SMEs need latency and backups more than a sovereignty whitepaper. Be precise about which one you are buying.
VPS and cloud VMs
A small VPS isolates you from noisy neighbours and lets you tune PHP workers. It also means you own patches. Unpatched Ubuntu is not “control”; it is a calendar for ransomware.
Use a panel (Runcloud, GridPane, SpinupWP, or similar) if you are not a sysadmin. Raw SSH plus a founder is how SSL and backups get skipped.
Autoscaling theatre
SME WordPress rarely needs Kubernetes. It needs a larger box before a campaign and a cache. Do not buy a platform engineer for a 20-page site.
Managed WordPress as a product
You pay for updates, malware monitoring, staging, and someone who has seen the last WP exploit. That can be cheaper than one incident. It is not a substitute for a care plan that includes content and plugin discipline.
Ask: PHP version policy, backup retention, restore test, and whether they block the plugins you actually need.
Agency care versus host care
Hosts patch the box. Agencies patch the site. You usually need both, or a managed host plus a monthly human who looks at the front end.
Front-end platforms for Next.js and static
Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare Pages, and similar fit Next.js and static exports. You buy previews, deploys from Git, and edge caching — not cPanel.
Watch function limits and bandwidth on image-heavy catalogues. Preview URLs are part of editor workflow on headless builds — headless vs WordPress.
Email, DNS, and domains
Register the domain at a registrar you control. Point DNS deliberately: web host A/CNAME, email MX to Workspace/365, nothing “temporary” for a year. Guide: custom domain and business email.
TTL mistakes and leftover A records at an old host are the usual cutover outage. Write a go-live checklist.
Who owns the registrar login
You do. Not the cousin who bought it on a personal email in 2019. Recover that before a redesign.
Support hours, tickets, and festival risk
IST evening support matters when ads are live. A host that only answers US mornings will not save a Saturday sale. Read recent ticket quality, not chatbots on the marketing site.
Ask what happens if you need a restore at 22:00. If the answer is “open a ticket,” buy backups you can restore yourself.
Compliance questionnaires
Enterprise buyers may ask for ISO or SOC reports from the host. Shared ₹199 plans will not have them. Do not promise what the host cannot print.
Cost beside Brevia build floors
Expect hosting in hundreds to a few thousands of rupees a month for honest WP, more for Woo and high traffic, and platform bills in dollars for Next.js. That sits beside OTP builds: Landing ₹7,500; Business ₹28,000; Static from ₹18,000; store ₹38,000; Dynamic + SEO ₹50,000 + ₹15,000/mo; custom from ₹50,000.
Three-year host plus rebuild cost is the comparison that matters — website cost in India.
“Free forever” hosting
If the host is free, you are the product or the exit is painful. Budget a real host in the same proposal as the site.
How we choose with you from Chennai
We map stack → region → backup → who patches → email split. Then we migrate or install. We will not park you on a dying PHP version to save ₹150 a month.
Book a Consultation with current host invoices. Contact Us if you only need a second opinion before renewing a three-year shared plan.
Bring these four facts
CMS, monthly visits, whether you take payments on-site, and who will patch. Those four kill more bad host purchases than any review site.
