Field data beats office Lighthouse
CrUX or RUM on mobile is the argument. A developer’s laptop on fibre is a demo. If you cannot see field LCP, you are guessing.
Test the templates that earn money: service page, product, clinic speciality — not only Home. Home is often the heaviest and the least used after ads.
4G in the basement is a valid lab
Throttle, or walk downstairs. If the team refuses to test on a ₹12,000 Android, they are not testing India.
Hosting: noisy neighbours, PHP workers, and backups
Shared ₹99 WordPress hosting is a lottery. CPU steal, inode limits, and malware next door show up as random 8-second TTFB. Managed WordPress or a small VPS with a firewall and backups is the adult version.
Backups that have never been restored are not backups. Hosting without a restore drill is a brand risk — related: WordPress maintenance.
CDN is not a personality
A CDN helps static assets. It will not fix a 40-plugin origin that takes 3 seconds to think. Origin health first, then CDN.
Images, fonts, and the hero that ate the budget
Uncompressed PNG banners from a wedding photographer will fail LCP on any stack. Modern formats, sensible dimensions, and no 4× retina “just in case.”
Self-host font subsets. Five Google Fonts families plus icons plus a slider is a delay you chose. Brand guidelines can be negotiated with physics.
Video backgrounds on the homepage
Almost always a no for SMEs. A still from the shoot plus a YouTube link is enough. Autoplay video on Jio is how INP and data caps become reviews.
Third parties: chat, pixels, sliders, “AI” widgets
Each script is a second website living on yours. Chat, heatmaps, four pixels, a review popup, and a WhatsApp floating button stacked on a cookie banner will miss INP.
Ads need pixels. They do not need three tag managers fighting. Load what you will read this month.
Tag after interactive
If marketing insists on a widget, delay it. First paint belongs to the offer and the phone number.
WordPress-specific: builders, cache, and object cache
Page builders can ship. Unbounded page builders plus cheap hosting cannot. Cache plugins help; object cache and a sane theme help more. We would rather rebuild blocks than “optimise” soup.
Maintenance (PHP version, plugin debt) is performance. Abandoned sites get slower and then get hacked. WordPress Development includes discipline, not 40 add-ons.
WooCommerce is a separate performance project
Cart fragments and plugins need engineering. Treat Woo vs Shopify vs custom as a stack choice, not a speed tweak.
Next.js and Shopify: different knobs
Next.js: watch JS bundles and client components. Server-render money content. Hosting on a modern platform is easier than cPanel — cost in Next.js website cost.
Shopify: theme + app diet. You cannot SSH the box; you can refuse the seventh slider app. Launch bar: Shopify checklist.
Headless vanity
A headless storefront that ships 400kb of hydration “for smoothness” can lose to a boring Online Store 2.0 theme. Measure.
Core Web Vitals in SME language
LCP: how fast the main thing appears (usually a hero or heading). INP: how fast taps respond. CLS: how much the page jumps (late banners, fonts, embeds).
You do not need to lecture the founder in acronyms. You need to show a phone recording. Tie to SEO in CWV India when rankings are the argument.
- LCP: image and server, not a motivational slider
- INP: fewer main-thread scripts
- CLS: reserved space for ads and fonts
- TTFB: host and cache, not a motivational CDN logo
Passing on desktop only
If desktop is green and mobile is red, you failed India. Most of your buyers are on a phone. Fix mobile templates first.
What is worth paying for
A host that restores. Image pipeline. Removing builder debt. A redesign that deletes weight — redesign vs rebuild. Not a lifetime of “speed retainer” that never touches the hero.
Brevia includes performance gates on website packages. We will not promise CWV “green” if you require an autoplay 8K reel in the fold.
SEO retainers versus engineering tickets
Monthly SEO can flag regressions. Replatforming is a build. Do not confuse them on the invoice.
A 14-day cleanup sequence
Week one: inventory scripts and plugins, compress heroes, set caching, measure field or at least throttled mobile. Week two: kill the worst third parties, fix CLS culprits, decide if the host is the bottleneck.
If the theme is the bottleneck, stop buying plugins. Scope a rebuild. Cost honesty: business website cost.
Do not A/B ten things at once
Change the hero, measure. Change the chat widget, measure. SME teams that “optimise everything” learn nothing.
When to change stack instead of hosting
If editors need WordPress, change host and theme, not the CMS. If the site is becoming software, Next.js can be the cheaper three-year path. If you sell SKUs at volume, Shopify’s hosted model removes cPanel from the chat — platform chooser.
Book a Consultation with a URL and a Search Console CWV screenshot. We would rather move you to static from ₹18,000 than sell a ritual cache plugin.
Static is allowed
A brochure that changes twice a year does not need PHP on every request. Static from ₹18,000 is a performance decision as much as a CMS decision.
