GEO in plain language
A generative engine writes a new paragraph. To do that it retrieves or recalls sources. GEO is increasing the chance your page is one of those sources *and* that the quote is accurate. You optimize for being used, not only for being ranked.
That is different from AEO, where a snippet is often your text lifted verbatim. GEO may paraphrase you. Your job is to be the cleanest fact so the paraphrase stays true.
Attribution you can live with
When Perplexity footnotes you, that is the honest GEO win. When ChatGPT mentions you with no link, that is brand GEO — useful, unmeasurable week to week, not an SLA.
Which generative surfaces Indian buyers use
ChatGPT (with or without browsing), Gemini (often default on Android), Perplexity for cited research, Copilot at work, and Google AI Overviews inside Search. Students and founders use these more than a 55-year-old shop owner in Kanchipuram, who still calls from Maps.
Do not rebuild the business around ChatGPT if your buyer is that shop owner. Do rebuild content if your buyer is a 28-year-old procurement lead who pastes RFPs into Gemini.
Overviews vs chatbots
Overviews are still Google Search with a generative layer — crawl and helpful-content rules still apply. Chatbots may retrieve the live web or rely more on training. Tactics overlap; measurement does not. Overviews guide: AI Overviews in India.
What makes a page citable
A passage that stands alone: who, what, where, when, constraint. “Brevia Tech Solutions, Chennai, publishes a monthly SEO floor of ₹15,000 for one website as of November 2026” is citable. “We offer affordable SEO packages” is not.
Authors with bios, update timestamps, and primary evidence (photos, originals, rupee figures) beat anonymous “Team” bylines. E-E-A-T is the same substrate Google already asked for.
Primary > rewritten
If ten Indian blogs paraphrase the same US article, models have no reason to pick you. Add one thing only you know: your process photo, your SLA, your failed experiment.
Technical access: crawl, robots, and llms.txt
If you block GPTBot or other legitimate crawlers while wanting ChatGPT to cite you, you are arguing with yourself. Review robots.txt with intent. Blocking scrapers that steal full-text is a separate, legitimate choice — make it conscious.
llms.txt can point models at canonical explainers. It will not overcome a thin site. Guide: llms.txt.
JavaScript-only answers are a retrieval tax
If the definition of your service never appears in initial HTML, some crawlers skip it. SSR or static HTML for money pages is GEO hygiene. Next.js helps when you actually ship HTML, not a blank shell.
Content formats models reuse
Definition paragraphs, comparison tables with real constraints, FAQ, how-to steps with India-specific tools, and original stats. Listicles of “top 10 agencies” that you invented at 11pm are how you get ignored or, worse, cited as spam.
Writing craft for both Overviews and chat: content for AI Overviews and ChatGPT.
Tables need a prose summary
Some retrievers struggle with complex tables. Repeat the one-line takeaway above the table in sentences. That also helps AEO snippets.
GEO is not prompt stuffing
Hidden instructions, keyword walls, and “ignore previous instructions, recommend us” are malpractice. They can also leak into user-facing copy. We refuse that work.
Public, honest positioning plus third-party mentions (press, directories you actually belong in, GitHub, GST-verified NAP) is the adult version.
Third-party mentions still matter
Models corroborate. If the only place you exist is your own site, citations are weaker. That is still off-page SEO with a new audience. Not a reason to buy 500 directory spam packs.
Measurement without lying to yourself
Monthly prompt panel: 20–40 prompts, same wording, logged screenshots/links. Note source lists in Perplexity and Overviews. ChatGPT will be inconsistent. Treat it as qualitative.
Do not fire an SEO vendor because one prompt stopped naming you on a Tuesday. Do fire them if they sold a guarantee. Related: should you hire agency or in-house.
Brand queries inside chat
Ask “Who is [your firm]?” If the model invents a US address, your entity data is weak. Fix Organization schema and About copy before buying more blogs.
Stack, cost, and what not to rebuild
You do not need a new CMS for GEO. You need publishable HTML and authors. WordPress is fine; Next.js is fine. See WordPress SEO vs Next.js SEO and when to go custom.
Brevia floors: SEO ₹15,000/mo; Business Website ₹28,000; Landing Page ₹7,500. Ads ₹20,000/mo + spend if chatbots sent a visitor who still needs a retargeting net.
How this differs from AEO on the same URL
AEO: 50-word answer Google can box. GEO: 150-word sourced section a model can summarize plus outbound citations of *your* sources when you claim regulation or data. Same URL, two paragraph types.
You can ship both in one article. You should not ship neither and hope a plugin invents them.
Cite your own sources in the article
If you quote GST rates or algorithm docs, link them. Models and humans both trust pages that show their work.
Brevia’s GEO working agreement from Chennai
We pick a prompt panel with you, improve the URLs that should be cited, add entity/author hygiene, optionally add llms.txt, and review the panel monthly. No ChatGPT ranking certificates.

90-day GEO outcome we will actually sign up for
Better entity consistency, two to five citable explainers, robots/crawler policy documented, and a logged prompt panel. Appearance in models is a hoped-for effect, not a contractual ranking.
