Two properties, two ranking systems
Pack ranking: relevance, distance, prominence on the listing. Organic ranking: relevance and authority of URLs. Treating them as one “Google ranking” is how you buy the wrong work.
A CA firm can rank the pack for “CA near T. Nagar” and still lose “GST appeal consultant Tamil Nadu” to a site with a proper guide. Different SERP, different asset.
Look at the SERP before you write the SOW
If the screenshot is 90% map, buy GBP + a supporting page. If it is 10 blue links, buy website SEO. If it is ads + map + links, you probably need all three.
What GBP can do without a website
Calls, directions, booking links (sometimes), product lists, WhatsApp, photos. For a neighbourhood bakery, that can be the business. Google even allows listings without a site.
Limits: no long advice, weak hiring story, no owned email list, no ads landing you control, no E-E-A-T article layer, no GEO citations you own.
Directories will speak for you
If you have no site, Justdial and Practo-shaped results fill the vacuum. You may not like their phone number formatting or old photos.
What only the website can do
Comparisons, pricing explainers, multi-service IA, careers, compliance pages, llms.txt, schema-rich FAQs, and campaign landings. Also: converting out-of-catchment demand the map will never show.
Website SEO is on-page, technical, off-page. GBP has no equivalent of a crawl budget conversation, but it has review velocity and category choices.
Owning the URL is owning the offer
You can change a landing overnight. You cannot make Google’s listing layout into a Diwali campaign with a unique form. That is why ₹7,500 landings exist.
How the two should describe the same company
Same name, address, phone, hours, and services. If GBP says “Open 24 hours” and the site says 10–7, both assets leak Trust. Categories on GBP should match H1s on the site, not a wish list.
Website LocalBusiness schema should not invent a second pin. One entity. This is the NAP discipline from Chennai local SEO.
Reviews versus on-site testimonials
GBP reviews move the pack. On-site testimonials move sceptical buyers and AEO quotes when they are specific. You need a process for both, not a transfer of stars onto a widget that looks fake.
Never gate the Google review. Never buy them. Train staff. SMM can remind happy customers; it cannot replace the Maps graph.
Negative reviews belong on the listing you cannot hide
Deleting every 3-star (when Google even lets you) is a fantasy. Reply with process. The site can add context; it cannot launder the listing.
Tracking calls, routes, and forms without lying to yourself
GBP insights ≈ listing. Site analytics ≈ pages. Call recordings if you have consent and volume. UTM on the website URL in the profile if you need to see listing-to-site traffic.
Founders who only watch Instagram insights will under-invest in the channel that actually rang. Show the split monthly in the SEO report.
Unique phone numbers have a cost
Useful above a certain call volume. For a small clinic, GBP call insights plus a site form is enough. Do not buy a call-tracking stack that costs more than SEO.
Multi-location Tamil Nadu brands
One GBP per real premises. One location page per premises. Do not create pins for cities you visit twice a year. Service-area listings have rules — follow them rather than dropping pins on Coimbatore from Chennai HQ.
Corporate homepage can be national; each branch still needs local facts. That is hybrid local/national architecture.
Franchisees who edit the listing into chaos
Lock GBP permissions. A well-meaning manager adding every keyword to the name can suspend the listing. Governance is SEO.
When agencies only “do GBP posting”
Weekly offers on the listing are fine as a slice. They are not a strategy. If that is all you received for six months, you bought a social intern on Google’s UI.
A real local retainer includes categories, Q&A, photo cadence, review ops, citation cleanup, and a supporting site URL. Demand that list. See agency mistakes.
Access held hostage
If the agency’s Gmail owns the listing, you do not have a vendor — you have a landlord. Primary owner must be the business. Non-negotiable on our consultation.
Paid layers on top of both
Search ads and LSAs (where eligible) buy the top of the SERP while you wait for reviews. Landing URLs should be yours, fast, and matched — CWV included.
Never send expensive ads to a GBP-only existence with no landing. You will pay for clicks you cannot message with a full offer.
Brand campaigns still need a URL
People search the clinic name after Maps. Give them a site that agrees with the pin, not a parked domain.
A simple decision table we use in Thousand Lights
Stall / single offer / walk-in: GBP first, optional ₹7,500 landing. Multi-service professional: both, site from ₹28,000, SEO ₹15,000/mo. Multi-city: both, plus location IA. B2B SaaS in OMR: website SEO first, GBP optional for the office.
If you are unsure, we look at the actual SERPs for your ten phrases from keyword research. The layout decides the budget split.
Do not wait for a “complete brand website” to claim the pin
Create and verify GBP as soon as the door exists. Parallel the site. Maps empty while you debate colour palettes is how competitors take the pack.
